He joins fellow leading Briton Lord Foster, whose involvement in the development was announced in December. Lord Rogers, who said he was “delighted” by the news, will design Tower 3. Lord Foster will be responsible for Tower 2. The two buildings are separated by the site’s transportation hub. Tower 3, on which design is due to begin immediately, is Lord Rogers’s fourth major commission in New York. He is already redesigning the Jacob K Javits Convention Centre, and is also involved in a 200 million dollar (£109m) project to transform a two-mile stretch of the Lower Manhattan waterfront and a one billion dollar (£545m) expansion of Silvercup Studios in Long Island City, Queens. Lord Rogers said of his latest project: “It is a rare opportunity to have been appointed to design one of the new buildings on this key site in New York, and we are particularly delighted that we will be working in the heart of the city. “This will be a complex and challenging project – but one which will also help to contribute to the revitalisation of New York City and which will help to inspire a new hope for the city’s future.” The building at 175 Greenwich Street will include two million square feet of office space. Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki is to design Tower 4 at 150 Greenwich Street. The site consists of five towers, including the Freedom Tower. They will be built by developer Larry Silverstein.
