Perhaps we set these doctors a challenge. When the vaccine is chosen, get them all to publicly drink a glass of the vaccine and be filmed in front of a live audience. (This was suggested to a doctor who was promoting the new Swine Flu vaccine in 2009 – he didn’t take up the challenge).
Our evidence takes the following form: 1. A discussion of the reasons why compulsory vaccination may need to be considered; 2. An overview of relevant legal provisions; 3. An examination of the human rights law compliance of compulsory vaccination. 25 Our analysis under 3 establishes two parity arguments: a. If Covid-19 ‘lockdown’ measures are compatible with human rights law, then it is arguable that compulsory vaccination is too (lockdown parity argument);

Compulsory medical intervention versus external constraint in pandemic control.
Would compulsory treatment or vaccination for COVID-19 be justified? In England, there would be significant legal barriers to it. However, we offer a conditional ethical argument in favour of allowing compulsory treatment and vaccination, drawing on an ethical comparison with external constraints-such as quarantine, isolation and ‘lockdown’-that have already been authorised to control the pandemic in this jurisdiction. We argue that, if the permissive English approach to external constraints for COVID-19 has been justified, then there is a case for a similarly permissive approach to compulsory medical interventions.
Dr Lisa Forsberg
Lisa is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at Somerville College and in the Faculty of Law. Her main research interests lie in normative and practical ethics, and in the philosophy of medical and criminal law. Her postdoctoral project, ‘Changing One’s Mind: Neurointerventions, Autonomy, and the Law on Consent’, examines the extent to which English law on consent sufficiently protects morally salient patient interests.

Prior to this, I was a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Public Health Sciences, Karolinska Institute (2016), and at the Klinikum Rechts der Isar, Technical University Munich (2015). I taught law at King’s College London between 2011 and 2015, and bioethics at the University of Chichester between 2013 and 2015. I was a visiting fellow in the Department of Philosophy, Stockholm University in 2016, and a resident researcher at the Fondation Brocher in Hermance, Switzerland, in 2015 and 2013.
I have an LLB degree in English and French Law from King’s College London, a Licence-M1 in English and French Law from the Université de Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne, and an MA in Medical Ethics and Law also from King’s College London. I received my PhD in Law and Ethics from King’s College London in 2016.

Jonathan Pugh is a Parfit-Radcliffe Richards Senior Research Fellow and Manager of Visitors Programmes for the Oxford Uehiro Centre, University of Oxford. He recently led a Wellcome Trust funded project entitled “The Ethics of Novel Therapeutic Applications of Deep Brain Stimulation”. His research interests lie primarily in issues concerning personal autonomy in practical ethics, particularly topics pertaining to informed consent. He has also written on the ethics of human embryonic stem cell research, criminal justice, human enhancement, and gene-editing.

Dear Parents/Carers
As you may be aware Liverpool is in tier 3 Covid-19 safeguarding arrangements. As part of this process central government has identified Liverpool to pilot a new Covid-19 testing system. This is being called the Lateral Flow System. Sites across the city are due to be positioned across the City in order to carry out testing.
I am pleased to inform you that we at Broadgreen International School are in the privileged position of
being one of the first schools within the city to have the testing brought to our site.
I have met this afternoon with representatives of the British Army who will be in school next week to COVID-19 -19 to test all our students and staff. Each child and adult will be identified with a unique barcode to ensure personal identification of test and subsequent results. Results will be distributed to students and staff as soon as we are in receipt of them. If positive results are received the school will secure the individual concerned and in case of students inform parents carer immediately we will then operate our usual process of identifying others who may have been in close or direct contact for our self- isolation system will be put in place.
We are currently working with Public Health to identify how this pilot might benefit school communities
now and in the future. I am expecting that the testing at BGIS will start on Monday 9 November.
Under normal circumstances parental permission is sought for the testing of children, however under these very challenging and unprecedented circumstances that is not possible, therefore we would ask that if you wish to exclude your child from this test please do so in writing to me first thing on Monday morning. It is important that for the health of your child, those of other parents and carers and all adults in our school and local and wider Liverpool community that we co-operate 100% with this system of health protection. As soon as we have further information, as we receive further information will share.
We can expect immediate major disruption as to how schools may be able to function once our city and eventually across the country such testing sites are operational and the resulting implications. Individual schools may be affected differently and subsequently we may need to respond on an individual need basis. Your understanding and support at this very difficult time is much appreciated.
