1965 – “The Martian Sphinx”

I was recently contacted by Chris Skillings who found the 1965 book described below. This seems to be another example of something which was written about in Science Fiction years before something similar was said to have been discovered (although the “discovery” might not be what it appears to be). Richard D Hall and I discussed this in the “Secrets in the Solar System” show:

This 1965 book–The Martian Sphinx was actually written by John Brunner…, he used a pen-name of Keith Woodcott

I picked up a copy along with Against The Fall Of Night by Arthur C. Clarke today.  Clarke as noted in your Secrets Of The Solar System Film is quite interesting in that he unquestionably was “in the know” with regards to artifacts in the Solar System and possibly 9-11-2001 as presented in the 9-11 Alchemy Film…. Certainly he was cognizant of the radiation problems beyond the Earth’s magnetic field. James Michener in the course of researching his novel “Space” probably sussed out the radiation impossibilities in the course of his research for that book. The famous line uttered by the Astronaut dying of radiation poisoning and crashing into the Moon–“Blessed Saint Leibowitz, keep ’em dreaming down there….”

with the operative words being “down there” pretty well captures the Non-Frontier nature of our race trapped on the Planet/Reservation below the Van Allen Belts…. One more thing. Subtle media presentations of secret information as Mythic Fiction, serve to gradually inoculate the populace against The Germ of Truth/Belief the same way a serum of dead or harmless Germ will produce antibodies against infection…. The Media–including all aspects of the entertainment media are loaded with material that both prevents belief and paves the way for it. If you’re ever inclined to make a hollywood film or publish a big novel, you’d be advised to generate material in keeping with these two functions of the propaganda machine….

By the twenty-first century the world was drowning in its own population. A solution had to be found quickly – and it was, in “gravipower.” Wonderful, unending source of power – only the scientists knew that its use was reducing the Earth’s distance from the sun at a dangerous rate. But if another planet’s gravipower could be harnessed…

An expedition was launched to Mars, known to be uninhabited – except that a woman was wandering around its surface who claimed she had come from another galaxy to warn Earth of a terrible menace, and there was a huge polyhedron of metal emanating a force very much like that of gravipower.

Someone else had discovered it! A thousand years ago, or now? Friend, or enemy? (less)
