During the first atomic bomb test at the Trinity test site the tower which held the bomb was fragmented, but not vapourized or molten, despite being right next to a nuclear explosion. This led to the Orion Project at the British Interplanetary Society, a scheme to propel a spacecraft by a series of nuclear fission detonations.
